Conceptual Written Document

My ideas for my project have never really changed. Only slight differences have been made to make my work more professional, rather than just a collection of ideas that made no sense. I gave myself quite a big challenge and I did difficult. Though through the changes made like making all the photos have the same theme and have sound recordings that correspond with the photographs this helped to clarify my ideas. I believe I have achieved what I hoped to set out to do which was to make you engage more fully with my photographs.

Gallery Presentation

To present my works in a gallery I would like to have my photographs be 42x21cm prints on Pearl paper framed in a raw timber frame with white matting. I would choose to display my photography in a “U” shaped room with soft cream walls and gallery lighting. This way my photos would hopefully stand- out from the walls and the special effects of the “mist” would collect in the room.

To get the sense that you’re in amongst the photos I would like a machine that creates fog at your feet and that the heating in the gallery to be turned down a little and lighting to be a tad dimmed. The images would be numbered so people would know where to begin. I would choose to have the recordings on a speaker rather than people have head phones, I don’t want people to feel removed or isolated from each other. (I would use the expertise and experience of the gallery owner in regards to the playing of the recordings).

I would like the people to be given a post card before they enter that has my name, the name of the exhibition; the artist statement and my contact details. I have chosen to put this exhibition on in Canberra and hopefully it would run for 3-4 weeks. It would be brilliant if it were at the National Art Gallery.

Artist Statement

 The fire trail, a track up the back that I’ve grown up with; I watched the dawn of the new millennium on this track, watched the Canberra fireworks and today it’s just there whenever I want to get away or simply just go for a stroll with a family member. It has its own personality and a community and spirit that draws me, life and others to it. I love this fire trail because I know it will always be there.

Artist Statement Draft

Sound Proofing

These photographs are not necessarily a childhood memory or a place that I love it’s just a fire track at the back of my Suburb. I’ve always been inspired by my favourite chef Heston Blumenthal who has a way of making people use and question their senses when eating his meals and it was in his famous dish “Sound of the Sea” where I found my idea of recording my own sounds and playing them as a soundtrack to my photographs.

My title Sound Proofing relates to the fog in my photos. The fog creates a veil almost a numb feeling and when you look at my photos you’re seeing a normal landscape while hearing different types of recordings.

I’m hoping the viewer will start to wonder where the sounds are coming from and why they are there, but because of the fog, this veil that you can’t get out of, it is not until the last photo where what is really taking place is revealed.

Folio Major Assignment Idea

For my assignment I would like to present images accompanied with my own recording of sound effects. The inspiration for this idea came from the famous British chef Heston Blumenthal, whom  created a dish called “Sound of the Sea,” where you are encourage to listen to the sea while eating this dish. He wanted to awaken all of the diner’s senses. I thought that maybe I could somehow do this with my photography. I would like to show all my images with my own recordings of sounds. The connection of which the viewer may or may not at first glance fully understand. I would like conversations to start up and happen because that’s when I truly believe photography works, becomes popular and powerful and truly memorable. I would like the viewer to look deeper into the image and perhaps see what they are not looking at, what is not there. Almost like listening to the pauses in music. My photography is what I believe in and what is happening with our generation today. It is the contrast between some of the images and the sound recordings that you will hear that will initially and deliberately create the confusion and questions in the viewer’s mind, which is exactly what I would like to do. My other images will be less complex but I’m hoping will still encourage the viewer to look more closely and with the aid of the added sound recordings have a fuller sensual response.

For two examples I am thinking of a canyon of office buildings, bird calls, and for another example it seems nowadays we have nature all around us but all we hear instead is the sound of cars and traffic noise.

Where I Got My Inspiration From

Heston Blumenthal !!! and his famous dish called "Sound of the Sea", where the customer listens to sounds of the ocean while eating his dish.
